Cat TH406 Specifications
The Caterpillar TH406 telehandler is a versatile
mid-capacity machine built for construction, agriculture, and industrial
material-handling applications that demand stability, strong lifting capability,
and dependable hydraulic performance.
Designed around a robust chassis, a powerful
Caterpillar C4.4 diesel engine (available in mechanical DITAAC or
electronic ACERT variants), and a durable 4-speed power-shift
transmission, the TH406 provides reliable performance in rough terrain
and confined operational areas.
The boom structure, Z-bar linkage, and
multi-mode steering system give the operator precise load handling and
maneuverability. With a rated lift capacity of 3700 kg (8,100 lb), a
maximum lift height of 6.10 m (20 ft), and strong hydraulic and
mechanical systems, the TH406 earns its position as a dependable,
long-service telehandler in the Caterpillar B/C-generation family.
The TH406 is
equipped with one of two Caterpillar C4.4 diesel engines:
Standard Engine: Cat C4.4 Mechanical DITAAC
Gross Power: 74.5 kW (100 hp)
Maximum Torque: 410 Nm (1,400 rpm)
Optional Engine: Cat C4.4 Electronic DITAAC-ACERT
Gross Power: 93.1 kW (125 hp)
Maximum Torque: 496 Nm (1,400 rpm)
Engine Geometry:
- Bore: 105 mm (4.13 in)
- Stroke: 127 mm (4.99 in)
- Displacement: 4.4 L (268.5 cu.in)
These 4-cylinder, 4-stroke diesel engines are engineered for consistent torque
output, reduced fuel consumption, and reliable cold-start performance. The ACERT
electronic option offers improved fuel metering, cleaner combustion, and higher
power density. Both engines use a heavy-duty cooling system, with a multi-row
radiator and belt-driven water pump designed for high-debris and high-dust
environments. The air cleaner is a dual-element dry type with restriction
indicators for maintenance.
The lubrication system uses a full-pressure wet-sump configuration designed to
ensure continuous lubrication during heavy-duty operation on uneven terrain. The
liquid-cooling circuit uses a heavy-duty radiator and pressurized expansion
tank.
Lubrication System
- Oil Capacity: approx. 10-12 L (10.5-12.7 qt)
- Filter: full-flow spin-on cartridge
- Recommended Oil: SAE 15W-40 diesel engine oil
- Service Interval: typically 500 hours depending on duty cycle
Cooling System
- Coolant capacity: approx. 14-17 L (15-18 qt)
- Thermostat opening: approx. 82°C (180°F)
- Fan: mechanical, engine-driven
Transmission: 4-speed power-shift. The power-shift
gearbox allows directional shifting under load and smooth gear changes during
repetitive loading cycles. Shift modulation is mechanical-hydraulic. The
limited-slip front differential enhances traction on uneven and loose terrain.
Rear axle oscillation increases stability when carrying loads over irregular
ground. The wet-disc brake design resists wear, heat, dust, and moisture,
ensuring long brake life and consistent stopping power.
Forward Travel Speeds:
1st - 7 km/h (4.3 mph)
2nd - 12 km/h (7.45 mph)
3rd - 21 km/h (13 mph)
4th - 32 km/h (19.8 mph)
5th gear (optional configuration only): 40 km/h (25 mph)
Reverse Travel Speeds:
1st - 7 km/h (4.3 mph)
2nd - 12 km/h (7.45 mph)
3rd - 21 km/h (13 mph)
