The Clark C40L is powered by the GM V6 4.3L engine, a
sophisticated six-cylinder LPG power unit known for its reliability, fuel
efficiency, and smooth operation.
Basic Technical Data: The engine is a six-cylinder LPG with a displacement of
4300 cc or 262 cu in. It produces a rated power of 66.3 kW at 2400 rpm,
equivalent to 89 hp at 2400 rpm. Alternative specifications indicate power of
approximately 95 hp (70.8 kW) or 109.9 hp (82 kW) from some sources. The engine
features automatic shutdown protection in the event of low engine oil pressure,
excess engine coolant temperature, or high transmission oil temperature. The
engine complies with European exhaust and particulate emission regulations
according to CE conformity, with optional Euro stage 4 LPG version complete with
3-way muffler.
Lubrication: The engine employs a forced lubrication system. Routine
maintenance, including oil and filter changes, is mandated at specific hourly
intervals as outlined in the periodic maintenance schedule to ensure longevity
and performance.
Cooling: Engine temperature is regulated by a pressurized liquid cooling system
with an open-core, plate-fin radiator providing maximum cooling of the engine
and transmission in the harshest environments and most demanding applications.
Regular inspection of coolant levels and condition, as well as monitoring the
radiator, water pump, and hoses for wear and debris, is part of standard
preventative maintenance.
Transmission: The C40L is equipped with a two-speed,
full reversing powershift automatic transmission with electronic controls. The
transmission speeds are 2 forward and 2 reverse. The transmission disengages
when the parking brake is engaged to prevent a locked brake run. The
transmission and axle achieve maximum cooling in the harshest environments
thanks to the built-in open core radiator and finned plates.
Travel Speed: This forklift achieves a laden travel speed ranging from 21.8 km/h
to 23.3 km/h (13.5 mph to 14.5 mph), and an unladen speed of 20.9 km/h to 21.8
km/h (13.0 mph to 13.5 mph) depending on configuration.
Axles: The front axle is a drive axle with 2 driven wheels in standard
configuration, with 4x2 dual tyres available on the drive axle to improve
traction and stability when cornering with very wide loads. The wheelbase is
1950 mm or 76.8 in. The robust steering axle has pivotal bearings mounted in
rubber steel elements, with the double acting steer cylinder ensuring precise
and direct steering. To prevent fouling and extend service life, the steering
knuckle bearings are tapered and greaseable, and the connecting pivots have a
double shear design to withstand impacts without loosening or breaking.
Brakes: Service braking is handled by wet disc brakes (oil bath disc brake
system) that are enclosed and oil-cooled for smooth, quiet operation and minimal
wear for long service life. The brake pedal incorporates power assistance,
requiring little effort from the operator when braking, reducing worker fatigue.
The parking brake is a hand-operated mechanical lever that actuates the brake,
with the transmission disengaging when the parking brake is set, preventing
driving against the parking brake. The horn will also sound if the brake is not
set after 3 seconds.
The electrical system operates at a standard 12 volts,
powering the starter motor, lights, and electronic control units. The system
includes complete set of lights and safety systems as standard equipment. The
interactive dash provides both audible and visual warnings to operators.
On-board diagnostics allow operators to quickly address any issues, while engine
and powertrain protection safeguards the truck against overheating with
automatic shutdown features. The system includes Controller Area Network
(CAN-bus) communication for enhanced diagnostics and monitoring. The sound level
measured is 83 dBA.
The chassis is a heavy-duty, one-piece frame with
high-strength, welded and formed steel plate design that protects it from impact
damage and extends the life of the truck. The thick molded floor mat reduces
vibration and noise levels to improve operator comfort. A large, low cowl design
increases visibility of the forks and the load.
Wheels and Tires: The truck is fitted with pneumatic tires as standard. The
front tires are size 8.25x15-14PR, with alternative 7.50x15-12PR available. The
rear tires are size 7.00x12-14PR. The wheel configuration features 2 driven
wheels at the front and 2 steer wheels at the rear in standard configuration,
with 4x2 dual tyres available on the drive axle. Front tread width is 1165 mm or
45.9 in, with some configurations showing 1288 mm or 50.7 in, and rear tread
width is 1134 mm or 44.6 in.
Steering: The C40L features hydrostatic power steering that eliminates steering
kick-back, significantly reducing the effort required to turn the wheel,
especially when the truck is stationary or moving slowly under load. The
steering axle has pivotal bearings mounted in rubber steel elements, with the
double acting steer cylinder ensuring precise and direct steering. The tilt
steering column adjusts to suit the operator and provides easier entry and exit.
Car-like pedals ensure smooth maneuvering with very little effort while leaving
plenty of room for foot support.
The hydraulic system powers the lifting, tilting, and
auxiliary functions such as sideshift. The system is designed to provide maximum
horsepower while using a load-sensing flow control valve for steering to reduce
power loss and heat build-up. A full-flow reverse filter filters the oil to the
tank at each reverse flow, while rough particles are filtered directly via a
suction filter, thereby preventing them from entering the oil circuit and
ensuring a long service life for all hydraulic components.
A high-capacity pump provides adequate oil supply for the upright and the
hydrostatic steering, with a priority distributor ensuring steering priority in
all conditions. Load handling is controlled via a load sensitive-response and
precise control valve. A safety valve provides extra safety and prevents an
uncontrolled lowering of the load at all times, with the upright mounted load
lowering valve controlled independently of engine speed, allowing for greater
control at lower speeds.
The main hydraulic valve incorporates adjustable flow controls for tilt and
auxiliary functions for optimal performance of attachments. The sectional design
of the hydraulic system allows for the easy addition of extra functions and
simplifies service, saving time and money during repairs. The operating pressure
for attachments is maximum 140 bar (2030 psi), and the rated flow for
attachments is maximum 35 l/min (9.2 gpm).
The forklift is equipped with clear-view uprights
available in Standard, Hi-lo, and Triplex versions. The I-beam style upright
rails are designed to be 55% stiffer than conventional flat-faced rails, with
better resistance to side-to-side deflection, promoting longer life and improved
stability with elevated loads. The hydraulic cushioning valves create silent
staging that reduces shock and vibration. Each carriage has 6 sealed and canted
load rollers and 4 side thrust rollers which maximize load distribution and
reduce free play.
The standard mast configuration has a lowered height of 2384 mm or 93.9 in. It
provides a free lift of 156 mm or 6.1 in, enabling lifting in low-clearance
areas before the mast sections begin to extend. The maximum lift height is 3300
mm or 130 in. The mast extends to a height of 4552 mm or 179.2 in including load
backrest. Maximum lift height can reach up to 7000 mm (276 in) depending on mast
configuration.
The mast tilts forward by 8 degrees and backward by 10 degrees to facilitate
load handling and secure transport. The fork carriage is DIN 15173 Class III A,
with carriage width of 1348 mm or 53.1 in, with some configurations showing 1678
mm or 66 in width. The standard fork dimensions are 50 mm thick, 122 mm wide,
and 1067 mm long, which is 2.0 in by 4.8 in by 42 in. Integral sideshift is
available as standard equipment.
