Hyster H30XL Specifications
The Hyster H30XL is a 3,000-lb (1,360-kg) capacity
internal-combustion forklift designed during Hyster’s XL-series era, a period
known for rugged, mechanically simple, and long-lasting industrial lift trucks.
The H30XL gained a reputation for outstanding durability, field-serviceability,
and consistent performance in warehousing, light manufacturing, agriculture, and
logistics environments.
Built with fewer electronics than modern
forklifts, it relies on mechanical robustness, heavy steel construction,
and straightforward hydraulic and drivetrain systems that many operators
value for their reliability and low long-term maintenance costs.
The H30XL commonly features a gasoline or LPG industrial engine paired
with a strong powershift transmission and a rigid mast structure capable
of delivering smooth lift performance. Its compact wheelbase, responsive
rear-wheel steering, and stable chassis geometry provide excellent
maneuvering ability in tight indoor aisles as well as outdoor yards.
Many units remain in service decades after production, underscoring the
model’s durability and popularity in demanding but cost-sensitive
operations.
The H30XL was typically equipped with a 2.2-2.4 L
industrial four-cylinder internal-combustion engine.
Depending on year and market, these
included:
- GM 2.4L gasoline/LPG industrial engine
- Mazda 2.0L or 2.2L LPG engine (in earlier configurations)
Basic Engine Characteristics:
- Displacement: approx. 2.0-2.4 L
- Rated power: approx. 40-50 hp (30-37 kW)
- Rated torque: approx. 90-110 lb-ft (122-149 Nm)
- Fuel type: gasoline or LPG
- Compression ratio: typically 8.5:1-9.2:1 (varies by engine family)
- Idle speed: approx. 650-750 rpm
The engines use carburetion or early LPG mixer-type fuel systems, designed for
ease of service and tolerance to variable fuel quality.
Lubrication System
The lubrication system is a pressure-fed wet-sump configuration using a
gear-type oil pump.
- Oil capacity: approx. 3.8-4.3 L (4.0-4.5 qt)
- Operating oil pressure: approx. 20-30 psi (138-207 kPa) at idle; up to 60 psi
(414 kPa) at high RPM
- Recommended oil viscosity: SAE 10W-30 or 15W-40 depending on climate
Oil passes through a full-flow replaceable spin-on filter. Engines with heavy
service cycles benefit from shorter change intervals.
Cooling System
A belt-driven centrifugal water pump circulates coolant through the block and
radiator.
- Coolant capacity: approx. 6-7 L (6.3-7.4 qt)
- Thermostat opening: approx. 82°C (180°F)
- Cooling system pressure: approx. 12-15 psi (83-103 kPa)
A mechanically driven fan and shroud provide continuous airflow during
slow-speed operation, typical of industrial lift cycles.
Transmission
The H30XL uses a hydraulic powershift transmission with a torque converter and
mechanically actuated forward/reverse direction control.
- Transmission type: single-speed powershift
- Forward travel speed: approx. 10-12 mph (16-19 km/h)
- Reverse travel speed: similar to forward
- Transmission fluid capacity: approx. 6-8 L (6.3-8.4 qt)
- Recommended fluid: ATF Dexron II/III or equivalent
The torque converter allows smooth acceleration and minimal drivetrain shock.
Drive Axle
A fixed front drive axle handles traction and mast weight.
- Lubrication capacity: approx. 2-2.5 L (2.1-2.6 qt)
- Lubricant: SAE 80W-90 gear oil
Planetary reduction may be present depending on production batch and options.
Braking System
The braking system is a drum-type design engineered for rugged industrial
operation.
- Service brake: hydraulic drum brakes at front wheels
- Parking brake: mechanical hand-lever drum brake on transmission output shaft
or rear axle (variant-dependent)
Brakes are simple, service-friendly, and designed for heavy dust and debris
environments common to older warehouses and yards.
The H30XL uses a basic 12-volt electrical architecture
with minimal electronic modules.
Electrical Specifications:
- System voltage: 12 V
- Battery capacity: approx. 55-70 Ah
- Alternator output: approx. 35-55 A
- Starter motor: approx. 1.4-1.8 kW
Electrical components include ignition coil, distributor, basic safety switches,
and lighting circuits. LPG engines use electronic ignition boosters for improved
spark reliability.
The chassis is a welded thick-steel frame designed for
longevity under full load cycles.
Drive and Wheel Configuration:
- Drive wheels: front
- Steering wheels: rear
- Drive mode: 2WD
Tire Options:
- Front: 6.50-10 (cushion) or pneumatic equivalent
- Rear: 5.00-8 (cushion or pneumatic)
Pneumatic tires provide better outdoor shock absorption; cushion tires excel in
smooth-floor indoor applications.
The H30XL uses a fully hydraulic steering system designed for light steering
effort even under maximum load.
Steering Characteristics:
- Type: hydrostatic rear-wheel steering
- Orbitrol steering valve with priority flow
- Steering pump flow: approx. 6-10 L/min (1.6-2.6 gpm)
- Turning radius: approx. 2.0-2.2 m (79-87 in)
The rear steering axle oscillates to maintain ground contact, improving
stability on uneven surfaces.
The hydraulic system powers lift, tilt, and auxiliary
hydraulic functions.
Performance Characteristics:
- System pressure: approx. 2,000-2,500 psi (138-172 bar)
- Pump type: gear pump driven from engine
- Pump flow: approx. 20-30 L/min (5.3-7.9 gpm)
- Hydraulic tank capacity: approx. 25-30 L (26-32 qt)
- Recommended fluid: ISO VG 32 or VG 46 hydraulic oil
Lift and tilt cylinders are heavy-duty double-acting types. Optional auxiliary
functions include sideshifting carriages, fork positioners, and clamps.
