Hyster H70C Specifications
The Hyster H70C is a rugged 7,000-lb (3,175-kg)
capacity internal-combustion forklift designed during an era when
material-handling machines were engineered for mechanical simplicity, long-term
durability, and ease of field service. As part of the classic Hyster “C-Series,”
the H70C was widely used in manufacturing plants, steel yards, lumber mills,
shipping terminals, industrial warehouses, and construction supply facilities.
It earned a strong reputation for reliability
thanks to its heavy steel chassis, straightforward hydraulic
architecture, and robust powertrains. Even decades after production,
many H70C units remain operational, supported by easily available parts
and the machine’s inherently service-friendly design.
The H70C excels in harsh and dirty environments where modern electronic
systems may suffer. Its mechanical linkages, conventional ignition
systems, and open, accessible components make it ideal for operations
needing a dependable workhorse with low maintenance overhead.
Although lacking modern comfort upgrades, the
H70C maintains solid lifting performance, stable chassis geometry, and
predictable handling behavior that operators appreciate for demanding
industrial workloads.
The H70C was
equipped with gas or LPG industrial engines, most commonly:
- Continental F227 or F245 industrial gasoline engine
- Ford or Chrysler inline-six LPG engines (varied by production period)
Engine Characteristics:
- Displacement: approx. 3.7-4.0 L
- Rated power: approx. 55-70 hp (41-52 kW)
- Rated torque: approx. 140-175 lb-ft (190-237 Nm)
- Fuel type: gasoline or LPG
- Idle speed: approx. 600-700 rpm
- Maximum governed speed: approx. 2,400-2,600 rpm
Lubrication System
A full-pressure lubrication system ensures continuous oil delivery to bearings,
cylinder walls, and valvetrain components.
- Oil capacity: approx. 5.0-6.0 L (5.3-6.3 qt)
- Oil pressure: 15-25 psi (103-172 kPa) at idle; 45-60 psi (310-414 kPa) at
rated rpm
- Oil type: SAE 10W-30 or 15W-40 depending on temperature
Cooling System
The cooling system uses a belt-driven water pump, mechanical fan, and
large-capacity radiator.
- Coolant capacity: approx. 10-12 L (10.5-12.7 qt)
- Thermostat opening: approx. 82°C (180°F)
- Pressure cap: approx. 13 psi (90 kPa)
Reliability depends on keeping the radiator fins clean and maintaining proper
coolant levels.
Transmission
The H70C commonly used a heavy-duty powershift transmission with mechanical
forward/reverse direction control.
- Type: single-speed hydraulic powershift
- Forward travel speed: approx. 10-12 mph (16-19 km/h)
- Reverse travel speed: similar
- Transmission fluid: ATF Dexron or Type-A equivalent
- Capacity: approx. 10-12 L (10.5-12.7 qt)
Drive Axle
A reinforced cast-steel front drive axle supports the mast assembly and high
traction loads.
- Lubricant type: SAE 80W-90
- Capacity: approx. 4.0-5.0 L (4.2-5.3 qt)
Brakes
Durable industrial braking system built for heavy cycles.
- Service brake: hydraulic drum brakes on front axle
- Parking brake: mechanical hand-lever drum system
The H70C uses a basic 12-volt electrical system.
- Battery: approx. 70-100 Ah
- Alternator/generator output: approx. 35-60 A
- Starter power: approx. 2.0-2.5 kW
Early versions used generators; later units used alternators. Ignition is
distributor-based with replaceable points, condenser, and coil.
The H70C features a heavy welded frame engineered to
handle high torsional stress and outdoor industrial wear.
Drive Configuration:
- Drive wheels: front
- Steering wheels: rear
- Drive type: 2WD
Tires:
- Front: approx. 8.25-15
- Rear: approx. 6.50-10
Pneumatic tires give better outdoor absorption, while solid tires are ideal for
steel yards and debris-heavy locations.
The H70C uses a hydrostatic power-assisted steering system.
Steering:
- Steering type: hydraulic orbitrol valve
- Steering pump flow: approx. 8-12 L/min (2.1-3.2 gpm)
- Steering angle: approx. ±75°
- Turning radius: approx. 2.6-2.8 m (102-110 in)
Lift, tilt, and auxiliary functions use an
engine-driven gear pump.
- System pressure: approx. 2,200-2,500 psi (152-172 bar)
- Pump flow: approx. 40-55 L/min (10-14.5 gpm)
- Hydraulic tank capacity: approx. 35-40 L (37-42 qt)
- Fluid type: ISO VG 32 or VG 46
