Hyster S40C Specifications
The Hyster S40C is a compact, mid-capacity
internal-combustion cushion-tire forklift designed for indoor industrial
operations requiring maneuverability, reliability, and ease of maintenance. As
part of Hyster’s classic C-Series, the S40C is built on a rugged steel frame
with minimal electronic systems, making it highly serviceable in environments
where simplicity and durability are essential.
With a rated lift capacity of 4,000 lb (1,814
kg), this model is commonly used in warehouses, fabrication shops,
freight operations, light manufacturing facilities, and retail
distribution centers. Its compact wheelbase, responsive rear-wheel
steering, and stable mast geometry allow operators to work efficiently
in narrow aisles and tight staging areas.
The S40C typically features gasoline or LPG engines, mechanical ignition
systems, and dependable powershift transmissions. Its hydraulic system
is engineered for smooth lifting and stable load control.
While not equipped with modern electronic
features, the S40C excels in environments where ruggedness and
predictable mechanical behavior are more valuable than data logging or
automatic adjustment systems. Decades after its introduction, many S40C
units remain operational due to their long-lasting construction,
abundant parts availability, and straightforward maintenance
requirements.
The Hyster S40C was produced with several industrial
engine options depending on year and region.
Standard engines include:
- Continental F162 or F163 gasoline engine
- GM 3.0 L or 2.5 L LPG/gasoline industrial engine (later production years)
- Mazda industrial LPG engines depending on configuration
Basic Engine Characteristics:
- Displacement range: approx. 2.5-3.0 L
- Power output: approx. 45-60 hp (34-45 kW)
- Torque output: approx. 95-125 lb-ft (129-169 Nm)
- Fuel types: gasoline or LPG
- Idle speed: approx. 650-750 rpm
- Rated engine speed: approx. 2,400-2,600 rpm
The engines use a carburetor or LPG mixer-regulator fuel system, mechanical
ignition, and simple emission-control components depending on production era.
Lubrication System
The engine uses a full-flow, pressure-fed lubrication system.
- Oil capacity: approx. 4.0-5.0 L (4.2-5.3 qt)
- Oil pump: gear-type, crankshaft-driven
- Oil pressure: approx. 20-30 psi (138-207 kPa) at idle, up to 60 psi (414 kPa)
at speed
- Recommended oil: SAE 10W-30, 15W-40 depending on climate
A replaceable spin-on oil filter is used. Regular oil changes are essential due
to the airflow and dust typical of industrial operations.
Cooling System
Cooling is managed by a belt-driven centrifugal water pump and radiator
assembly.
- Coolant capacity: approx. 7-9 L (7.4-9.5 qt)
- Thermostat opening temperature: approx. 82°C (180°F)
- System pressure: approx. 12-15 psi (83-103 kPa)
The mechanically driven fan ensures adequate airflow even at low travel speeds
typical of forklift operation.
Transmission
The S40C uses a durable single-speed powershift transmission.
- Type: hydraulic powershift with torque converter
- Forward travel speed (unladen): approx. 10-12 mph (16-19 km/h)
- Reverse travel speed: approx. 10-11 mph (16-18 km/h)
- Transmission fluid capacity: approx. 6-8 L (6.3-8.4 qt)
- Fluid type: ATF Dexron II/III
The transmission’s mechanically modulated clutch packs allow smooth directional
changes, making the truck ideal for frequent forward-reverse cycles.
Drive Axle
A heavy-duty cast steel drive axle supports mast loads and transmits power.
- Lubrication capacity: approx. 2-3 L (2.1-3.2 qt)
- Lubricant type: SAE 80W-90 gear oil
Planetary final drives may be equipped depending on configuration.
Brakes
The braking system is rugged and simple.
- Service brakes: hydraulic drum brakes (front axle)
- Parking brake: mechanical hand-lever drum brake
The S40C features a simple 12-volt electrical system
with minimal electronics.
- Battery capacity: approx. 55-75 Ah
- Charging system output: approx. 35-55 A (alternator or generator depending on
year)
- Starter motor: approx. 1.8-2.0 kW
Ignition is typically distributor-based with replaceable points, condenser, and
coil.
The chassis is a welded heavy-steel structure designed
to support mast loading forces and resist long-term wear.
Drive configuration:
- Drive wheels: front
- Steering wheels: rear
- Drive mode: 2WD
The S40C is a cushion-tire truck intended for indoor operation on smooth
concrete.
Tires:
- Front: approx. 21x7x15
- Rear: approx. 16x5x10.5
Non-marking tires are available for specialized applications.
The S40C uses a hydraulically assisted rear-wheel steering system.
Steering:
- Steering type: orbitrol hydraulic steering
- Steering pump flow: approx. 6-10 L/min (1.6-2.6 gpm)
- Turning radius: approx. 1.9-2.1 m (75-83 in)
- Rear axle: oscillating to maintain tire contact on uneven surfaces
Hydraulic functions include lift, tilt, and auxiliary
circuits for attachments.
- System pressure: approx. 2,000-2,500 psi (138-172 bar)
- Pump type: engine-driven gear pump
- Pump flow: approx. 20-30 L/min (5.3-7.9 gpm)
- Hydraulic tank capacity: approx. 25-30 L (26-32 qt)
- Hydraulic fluid type: ISO VG 32 or VG 46
Lift and tilt cylinders are double-acting. Optional auxiliary hydraulics include
sideshift, fork positioners, and clamp functions.
