power, efficiency, and maneuverability. Powered by a choice of PSI 2.4L engines
producing 59 hp (44 kW) or Kubota 2.5L engines with similar output, this model
delivers reliable torque for lifting and maneuvering loads up to 4000 lb (1814
kg) while maintaining fuel efficiency suitable for demanding applications.
Its compact design, combined with a tight turning radius of 76.8 in (1950 mm),
allows for excellent maneuverability in congested warehouse aisles and tight
spaces. The S40FT is equipped with cushion tires, providing stable performance
on improved surfaces common in warehouse environments. Operators benefit from
ergonomic features including hydrostatic power steering with an infinitely
adjustable steer column, a single pedal inch brake, and a rubber floor mat that
reduces fatigue during extended shifts.
The Electronic Powershift transmission with auto deceleration system extends
brake life by up to 60%. The Hyster Stability System (HSS) provides enhanced
safety by monitoring and adjusting truck operations. The 2-stage limited free
lift VISTA PLUS mast delivers lift speeds up to 126 ft/min (0.64 m/s) unladen.
The Hyster S40FT is a rider-seated forklift powered by either LPG or dual fuel

The Hyster S40FT is powered by a choice of proven
industrial engines depending on fuel type and customer requirements. The PSI
2.4L LPG engine is standard for LPG models, with Kubota 2.5L dual fuel engines
available for gasoline/LPG configurations. The Mazda 2.0L/2.2L or GM 2.4L
engines are also used.
Basic Technical Data for PSI 2.4L Engine: The engine is a 4-cylinder LPG power
unit with a displacement of 143 cu.in (2343 cc to 2351 cc). It produces a rated
power of 59 hp at 2700 rpm, equivalent to 44 kW at 2700 rpm. The engine delivers
a torque of 121 lb-ft at 2000 rpm (164 Nm at 2000 rpm). The PSI 2.4L is a dual
fuel engine capable of operating on LPG.
Basic Technical Data for Kubota 2.5L Engine: The Kubota dual fuel option
features a 4-cylinder design with a displacement of 2491 cc (152 cu.in). It
produces a rated power of 59 hp at 2500 rpm, equivalent to 44 kW at 2500 rpm.
The engine delivers a torque of 131 lb-ft at 1000 rpm (18 kg/m at 1000 rpm).
Basic Technical Data for Alternative Engine Options: Some configurations feature
2.2L engines producing 51 hp (38 kW) at 2600 rpm with 94 lb-ft (128 Nm) torque
at 1800 rpm and displacement of 134.3 cu.in (2201 cc). Fuel Tank: 10.7 to 11.0
gal (40.0 to 41.6 L) for non-LP units.
Lubrication: The engine employs a forced lubrication system. Routine
maintenance, including oil and filter changes, is mandated at specific hourly
intervals as outlined in the periodic maintenance schedule to ensure longevity
and performance. The 250-hour/6-month maintenance includes changing engine oil
for Mazda and GM engines.
Cooling: Engine temperature is regulated by a pressurized liquid cooling system.
Regular inspection of coolant levels and condition, as well as monitoring the
radiator, water pump, and hoses for wear and debris, is part of standard
preventative maintenance. The 4000-hour/2-yearly maintenance includes changing
the cooling system for Mazda and GM engines.
Transmission: The S40FT is equipped with a basic
electronic powershift transmission featuring one forward and one reverse speed.
Available configurations include Electronic Powershift, DuraMatch, and DuraMatch
Plus. The DuraMatch transmission manages braking and direction changes,
extending the service life of brakes and tires. The auto deceleration system
automatically slows the truck when the accelerator pedal is released, extending
brake life by up to 60%. Controlled power reversal virtually eliminates tire
spin, increasing tire life by up to 50%. The transmission type is automatic
powershift with torque converter.
Travel Speed: This forklift achieves a laden travel speed ranging from 11.1 mph

wheel configuration features 2 driven wheels at the front and 2 steer wheels at
the rear. Overall width is 42.0 in (1067 mm) for standard tread configuration,

The S40FT features hydrostatic power steering as standard equipment. This system
significantly reduces the effort required to turn the wheel, especially when the
truck is stationary or moving slowly under load. The steer column is infinitely
adjustable, allowing operators to position the steering wheel for optimal
comfort and control.
The hydraulic system powers the lifting, tilting, and
auxiliary functions such as sideshift. The system features a 3-function
hydraulic control valve as standard. Load handling is controlled via precise
control valve. The auxiliary hydraulic pressure relief for attachments is set at
2250 psi (15.4 MPa to 15.5 MPa). The hydraulic tank capacity is 9.5 to 10.0 gal
(36.0 to 37.9 L) for drain and refill.
The forklift is equipped with a 2-stage limited free
lift VISTA PLUS mast as standard, with optional 2-stage full free lift (FFL) and
3-stage FFL configurations available to suit various applications. The VISTA
PLUS mast design provides excellent visibility. The standard 2-stage LFL mast
has a lowered height of 85 in (2135 mm). It provides a free lift of 5 in (140
mm) with load backrest, enabling lifting in low-clearance areas before the mast
sections begin to extend. Optional full free lift masts provide 62 in (1575 mm)
of free lift without load backrest.
The maximum fork height is 129 in (3292 mm) for the standard 2-stage LFL mast.
The mast extends to a height of 178 in (4515 mm) including load backrest.
Without load backrest, extended height is 151 in (3840 mm). The mast tilts
forward by 5 degrees and backward by 5 degrees to facilitate load handling and
secure transport. The fork carriage is a 38.5 in (980 mm) wide carriage. The
standard fork dimensions are 1.6 in thick, 3.9 in wide, and 42 in long, which is
40 mm by 100 mm by 1067 mm. The maximum fork spread (outside dimensions) is 38.3
in (974 mm).

The lift speed with a load is 122 ft/min (0.62 m/s) for
the standard 2-stage LFL mast, and without a load, it increases to 126 ft/min
(0.64 m/s). Optional 2-stage FFL mast lift speeds are 106 ft/min (0.54 m/s) with
load and 112 ft/min (0.57 m/s) without load. Optional 3-stage FFL mast lift
speeds are 114 ft/min (0.58 m/s) with load and 120 ft/min (0.61 m/s) without
load. Lowering speeds are 114 ft/min (0.58 m/s) with load and 98 ft/min (0.50
m/s) without load for the standard 2-stage LFL mast.
Optional mast lowering speeds range from 98 ft/min to 106 ft/min (0.50 m/s to
0.54 m/s) with load and 83 ft/min to 93 ft/min (0.42 m/s to 0.47 m/s) without
load. The truck can generate a maximum drawbar pull of 4453 lb (2020 kg) when
laden and 1764 lb (800 kg) when unladen. Its maximum gradeability is 39 percent
when laden and 24 percent when unladen. Maximum climbing ability is 39%.
The overall length of the truck without forks is 88.1
in (2238 mm). With the standard 42 in forks, overall length is approximately
130.1 in (3305 mm). The overall width is 42.0 in (1067 mm) for standard tread
configuration. The height to the top of the overhead guard is 84 in (2128 mm),
with optional guard height of 82 in (2061 mm). The step height from ground to
running board is 13.8 in (350 mm). Ground clearance, unladen, is 3.6 in to 5 in
(91 mm to 130 mm) at the lowest point and 4.9 in (125 mm) at the centre of the
wheelbase.
With a load, ground clearance decreases by approximately 6 mm (0.24 in). The
minimum aisle width required for right-angle stacking (add length of load) is
92.1 in (2340 mm). The equal aisle width for 90-degree intersecting aisles is
73.8 in (1875 mm). The outside turning radius is 76.8 in (1950 mm). The truck's
operating weight, as specified, ranges from 7803 lb to 7838 lb (3539 kg to 3555
kg) depending on configuration.
250 Hours/6 Monthly Maintenance: Change engine oil for
Mazda 2.0L/2.2L and GM 2.4L engines, check for wear and damage drive belt, check
engine idle speed (800+/-25 RPM) and governed speed (2700+/-25 RPM), check LPG
regulator (drain tar).
500 Hours/6 Monthly Maintenance: Check hydraulic oil level (30.1 to 39.8 liters
depending on configuration), inspect and replace as required hydraulic tank
breather, clean battery and cable terminals.
1000 Hours/1 Yearly Maintenance: Change transmission oil filter after first 500
hours of operation, check fuel injectors for applicable engines.
2000 Hours/1 Yearly Maintenance: Change hydraulic oil filter, change hydraulic
tank breather, change air filter, change PCV valve, check oxygen sensor and
indicator light, change LPG fuel regulator filter for Mazda 2.0L/2.2L engines
(except 2007 emission compliant engines), change fuel filter for Mazda and GM
engines.
4000 Hours/2 Yearly Maintenance: Change hydraulic oil, inspect and replace as
required hydraulic tank breather, change cooling system for Mazda, GM, and
Yanmar engines.
